The idea of reading a book and feeling like you are involved in it has been around since ancient times. In Homer's "Odyssey," there is a scene where Odysseus meets Polyphemus, a Cyclops who was blinded by Odysseus' men.

In this scene, Odysseus tells Polyphemus that he wants to know how he was able to come up to him and hit him so hard with his massive club. Polyphemus states that he can see a light shining from a cave about a mile away. He says that whoever leaves the light there is someone who does not wish to hurt him and therefore does not wish to fight him, either.
